Getting Off Easy by Erin Nicholas

This book wasn’t what I was expecting when I read the summary. It was a very good and quick read with moments of hilarity but it wasn’t the single dad story that I thought it was going to be. It also wasn’t as hilarious as the Boys of the Bayou series but it held it’s own in the realm of entertainment. I mean who doesn’t love a guy who people just naturally rely on and who see as someone safe. I did receive an advanced copy of this book for an honest review and I’m glad I read it. I think I need to go back and read the other ones because I read the book before this one and that’s it.

James is not only a single firefighter but he is also a jazz musician and in New Orleans that means a hell of a lot more than it does elsewhere. He has been trying to get his neighbor Harper’s attention since she moved in across the hall. He has literally knocked on her door to get advice on how to taken care of a ficus (actually an olive tree), a lizard, a dog, and a drunk girl. But when he finds a baby in front of his door he freaks out and almost breaks her door down to get her to answer. Only when she answers she isn’t the calm, cool, and collected professor that he has come to expect. Now they need to figure out how to care for this baby boy together because he won’t give up Harper now that he has her actually seeing him as a man. Only what will they do if the mother of baby Isaac comes back for him?

Harper has come to love the knocks on her door from James. They now co-parent a dog and she has helped him with an olive tree and a lizard by now. Only this knock is different. This one is panicked and James doesn’t panic. But she doesn’t know how to help him with this. She doesn’t know anything about babies so after she has a proper freak out she lets herself into his home to make sure everything is alright. That’s when she realizes that the feelings she has for him won’t just go away. There is something about a big man holding a tiny baby that melted her reserve. Now she needs to help and by doing that she falls in love with the baby as much as the firefighter. What will she do if the mom wants a relationship with James? Who wouldn’t want a relationship with him?

Like I said this wasn’t the single dad story I was expecting but it definitely made the story more interesting. Especially when we find out who the mother is. I’d like to point out that though I guessed it that didn’t detract from it. I would actually really like a follow up book about James and Harper. Maybe a few years in the future. Considering how this book ends I’d like to see them handle all of the changes that this one threw at them. Can’t wait to read the next one and I really should read the others in this series.

—“‘Team James?’ Harper said. “Who’s the other team?”/ “Team Stay Single and Celibate,” Celia said with a grin. “I guess I could call James’s team Team Orgasm Central or Team Happily Ever After.'” -Celia and Harper—
