I want to start this one out by saying that I love the MacRieve clan. All of them. So I may gush over them a bit more than the others just a fair warning. This is the first official book in the Immortals After Dark series and starts with the missing lykae king, Lachlain, and his half-valkyrie, half-vampire mate, Emma. Lachlain had been tortured by vampires for years and for a good portion of the book he could not separate that torture from his mate. So he was rude, crude, and heavy handed with a woman who was probably just slightly less sheltered than a nun. Only slightly. But Emma was a great character. She didn’t take his crap even though he hurt her feelings and on occasion her. She just waited until she could retaliate. Though that all came to a head and Lachlain definitely proved he was book boyfriend worthy.
This book always gives me the feels. This is probably the third-ish time I’ve read it and I could read it again no problem. I want to also state that though I own the book, I also own the audiobook and have to give Robert Petkoff props for being superb. He is one of the best narrators I have listened to. And I’m very picky when it comes to narrators. Honestly, he does the female voice really well and his Scottish accent was on point. Since all the lykae are Scottish you hear a lot of it throughout the books. Anyway, this book was an extreme enemies to lovers paranormal romance but it is also a good foundation for all of the other books. This is a continuing series so don’t miss out!!
